Rechargeable lithium batteries

Lithium rechargeable batteries are popular for a variety of applications. The batteries maintain their charge for a long period of time when not in use and do not exhibit any “memory effect” during charging. In addition to being much lighter than comparable rechargeable batteries that use different chemicals, they are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes.

There are several different chemical compositions of lithium-ion rechargeable battery packs, each with its own performance, cost, and safety features. For help choosing the best chemistry for your application, contact Lithium Batteries.

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are popular for their higher energy density – twice that of nickel- and lead-based chemicals – and lower self-discharge rates, as well as their constant improvement. These batteries continue to be safer and cheaper than previous types of lithium batteries. There are many applications for lithium-ion rechargeable batteries, including:

  • Equipment used by the military or aerospace industry
  • Equipment used in the medical field
  • Goods tracking
  • As well as many others

Lithium polymer batteries

In many ways, lithium polymer battery technology is similar to lithium ion battery technology. Lithium-polymer cells are typically packaged in foil-like bags instead of steel or aluminum cans for Li-ion batteries. In addition to allowing for flexible packaging, this can result in lower costs and safer operation.

As manufacturers introduce smaller, lighter, and more powerful lithium polymer cells, lithium polymer cell technology is constantly improving. In addition to longer run times and higher discharge rates, lithium polymer battery packs are available in a variety of custom configurations. It is possible to make cells as thin as a credit card. The following are common uses:

  • Consumer electronics with one or two cells
  • A manufacturing industry
  • As well as many others

Due to lithium’s inherent volatility and lithium polymer’s high energy density, lithium ion and polymer batteries and cells require a battery management circuit to control and monitor their upper and lower voltage thresholds during charging and discharging. For each lithium-ion and polymer battery pack that we assemble, Lithium Batteries thoroughly develops and tests the battery management system.

Sealed lead-acid batteries

SLA batteries are inexpensive and easy to maintain, making them ideal for a wide range of rechargeable battery applications. Lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries require sophisticated battery management circuitry, whereas SLA batteries do not.

Among all batteries, SLA batteries have the lowest energy density. Whenever size and weight are not critical factors and costs must be kept to a minimum, sealed lead-acid batteries are the best choice.

A SLA battery is also ideal for stationary and standby applications such as uninterruptible power supplies and emergency lighting. For medical equipment and electric wheelchairs that require high performance, SLA cells are widely used due to their predictability and ease of maintenance.

EnerSys Cyclon, for example, is a popular “Pure Lead” SLA variant. Lead batteries can be charged faster and perform better at lower temperatures. The batteries retain and recover charge much better after long storage (1-2 years) and have a longer calendar life (5-8 years). SLA batteries with pure lead are popular in medical and defense applications.

Rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries

One of the oldest battery chemistries is nickel cadmium (NiCd). While numerous new chemicals have been developed in recent years, nickel-cadmium remains a popular and reliable technology for rechargeable batteries. NiCd batteries can last thousands of cycles if properly maintained.

In portable applications, nickel-cadmium batteries are typically spirally wound cylindrical cells or button cells. In aircraft and stationary long-term applications, NiCd wet batteries with larger plates are often used.

Rechargeable nickel-metal hydride batteries

The performance of nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) cells has increased continuously, making them a popular choice for small, lightweight, portable electronic devices. Lithium polymer   NiMH batteries  do not require sophisticated battery management circuitry to maintain their performance. Also, rechargeable NiMH battery packs are not subject to as strict transport regulations as lithium cells.

A NiMH battery of the same size offers 30-50% more energy capacity than a NiCd battery. In addition, they are less susceptible to the “memory effect” that can affect NiCd batteries. NiMH cells are also more economical than lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries.
