Lithium polymer batteries
Lithium polymer battery technology is similar to Li-Ion technology in many ways. The main difference between the two is the packaging – instead of the steel or aluminum cans for Li-ion batteries, lithium-polymer cells are typically placed in foil-like bags. This allows for flexible packaging and can result in lower costs and safer operation.
Lithium polymer cell technology is constantly improving as manufacturers introduce smaller, lighter, and more powerful cells. Lithium polymer battery packs are available in a variety of bespoke configurations that can deliver longer run times or higher discharge rates. Cells as thin as a credit card are possible. Sealed lead-acid batteries
Sealed lead-acid batteries (SLA batteries) are inexpensive and easy to maintain, making them ideal for a wide variety of rechargeable battery applications. Unlike other chemicals like lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, SLA batteries do not require sophisticated battery management circuitry and are not as strictly regulated for transportation.
SLAs have the lowest energy density of any battery. In cases where size and weight are not critical factors and costs need to be kept to a minimum, sealed lead-acid batteries are an ideal solution.
SLA batteries are also great for stationary and standby applications such as uninterruptible power supplies and emergency lighting, where reliability and long life are a must. Because SLA cells are predictable and easy to maintain, they are widely used for medical equipment and electric wheelchairs that require high performance.
A popular SLA variant is the “Pure Lead” technology such as EnerSys Cyclon. Pure lead batteries can be charged faster and perform well at lower temperatures. These batteries show much better charge retention and recovery even after long storage (1-2 years) and a longer calendar life (5-8 years). Rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries
Nickel cadmium (NiCd) is one of the oldest battery chemistries. Despite the development of numerous new chemicals in recent years, nickel-cadmium remains a popular and reliable technology for rechargeable batteries. With proper maintenance, NiCd batteries can last thousands of cycles.
Nickel-cadmium batteries used in portable applications are typically either spirally wound cylindrical cells or button cells. NiCd wet batteries with larger plates are often used in aircraft and stationary long-term applications.
Rechargeable nickel-metal hydride batteries
Continuous increases in the performance of nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) cells have made this chemistry a popular choice for small, lightweight, portable electronic applications. Unlike lithium-ion, lithium polymer NiMH batteries do not require sophisticated battery management circuitry to maintain their performance. In addition, rechargeable NiMH battery packs are not subject to as strict transport regulations as lithium cells.
NiMH batteries offer 30-50% more energy capacity than NiCd cells of the same size. They are also less prone to the “memory effect” that can affect NiCd batteries. And compared to lithium-ion and lithium-polymer batteries, NiMH cells are a far more economical choice.
